The ESF-Conference Series on "Science and Values" will be hosted by Bielefeld University and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), and is being organized by the Institute for Science and Technology Studies (IWT) of Bielefeld University in cooperation with the European Science Foundation. The series will encompass three conferences in a biennial schedule beginning in 2009, and again in 2011 and 2013. The topics of these conferences will be politicization, commercialization, and medialization of science, respectively.

Analytical and local understandings of ‘transition' in post socialist space

This conference aims to examine the social lives of the transition concept. We pose the question of whether we should continue to use the term when analysing the social, political and economical processes in the post-socialist world. If so, how should it be defined or measured? How does the analytical concept ‘transition' as used in the social sciences differ from the way it is used by local actors across the post socialist world? In short, we call for papers that investigate the concept of ‘transition' and its social life in academia, among political advisors, as well among the people who are presumably undergoing ‘transition'.

ENQUIRE: 3rd Issue, Winter 2009 Call for Papers: ENQUIRE aims to be established as a high quality online journal for the Social Sciences which provides an encouraging and exciting space for academic research from the UK and world-wide. The Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" and the Nuremberg Human Rights Center are holding an international conference on the theme of human rights. With this event, the organisers are providing a forum to discuss human rights issues today in the light of the injustices that led to the human rights declaration in 1948. The conference addresses experts from research and educational institutions and interested members of the public.
