The Transregional Center for Democratic Studies of The New School for Social Research is announcing the 19th Democracy & Diversity Graduate Summer Institute and welcomes a diverse cohort of forty junior scholars from The New School, Europe, and other parts of the world for an intensive program of study in society, culture and politics, this year centered around the theme “Citizens without Borders” (de-territorialization, and new practices that reshape identities and traditional notions of citizenship). The mission of the Helmholtz Research School is to contribute to civil security by undertaking innovative world-class research and providing an excellent doctoral training environment for young researchers in the field of security technologies. Examples of these technologies include optical and photonic systems for identification and authentication, sensors, spectrometers and video surveillance, optoelectronic and semiconductor components, and information and communication technology-based security system implementations. Understanding the human and societal impact of security will also be an integral part of the research training. The PhD program will be delivered by leading experts in the field and will offer a range of graduate course options, research seminars, summer schools and soft skills training.

The Neurogastroenterology Group, Queen Mary, University of London invites applications for a 3 year PhD studentship supported by Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research commencing October/November 2010. The studentship comes with a tax free stipend of £15,510 (including London allowance) and covers tuition fees up to the value for UK/EU students, and all related research costs. The studentship is open to UK/EU and overseas students who posses either a first or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

This PhD will continue the line of work being conducted at the University of Birmingham (School of Sport and Exercise Sciences) in dance psychology, with a particular emphasis on the role of the social environment and motivational processes to dancers' health and well-being. The PhD student will be supervised by Dr Eleanor Quested and Professor Joan Duda. This research pulls from contemporary theories of motivation and optimal functioning (in particular, Self Determination Theory) and also is marked by an interdisciplinary approach to the larger question. The successful applicant should have previous research experience in quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies, a knowledge of psychological theory, and an enthusiasm for conducting his or her research within the dance domain.
