2nd Global Conference: Evil, Women and the Feminine

3 to 5 May 2010, Prague, Czech Republic

    http://www.conferencealerts.com/seeconf.mv?q=ca1m6i83

    Call for Papers
Continuing from last year's successful project launch, this inter-disciplinary conference seeks to examine issues surrounding the conjunction between evil and the feminine. In many cultures women have been long suspected as the source of sundry human miseries, however basic to society they may be. At the same time as ideals of purity and dedication to family have been exalted and feminine beauty lauded, women have been viewed as embodying sinister forces of evil. Mistrusted as seductive and beguiling, women are also often thought of as vengeful, manipulative and even malevolent. In grappling with our understanding of what it is to be 'evil', the project aims to shine a spotlight on this dark area of the human condition and explore the possible sources of the fear and resentment of women.

Beyond Citizenship: Feminism and the Transformation of Belonging

30 June 2010 to 2 July 2010, London, United Kingdom

    http://www.bbk.ac.uk/bisr/beyondcitizenship/

The language of citizenship has, in recent years, been mobilized by feminists to articulate a wide range of claims and demands. The notions of economic, political, social, cultural, sexual/ bodily, and intimate citizenship, for example, have all been developed and explored in terms of their normative potential and their actual realization. In Europe, in particular, there has been a strong steer from research funders and policy makers towards research agendas which address the question of citizenship in the context of increasingly diverse and multicultural societies.

Confronting the Politics of Racialized Sexualities: On Regulating Minority Gender Relations and Sexualities

    11 to 17 July 2010, Gothenburg, Sweden

    http://www.conferencealerts.com/seeconf.mv?q=ca1mx608

Questions of gender and sexualities are essential to understand politics of race and nation at different levels of analysis, whether the local, the national, or the global.
Drawing on what David Goldberg called the ‘liberal paradox’, i.e. how the commitment of modernity to idealized principles of liberty and equality goes hand in hand with a multiplication of racialized identities and the sets of exclusions they prompt and rationalize, enable and sustain (Goldberg 1993), the proposed session will tackle the ways in which ethnocultural exclusion and racialization processes in western liberal democracies currently operate through the problematization of minority/migrant gender relations and sexualities.

ECREA WOMEN’S NETWORK WORKSHOP - Gender in European Academia: Difference and Discrimination in Communication Research

    25 November 2009

    http://www.conferencealerts.com/seeconf.mv?q=ca1mxm03

This workshop intends to analyse the actual situation of gender discrimination and to evaluate academic quality within European universities and polytechnics. Therefore, the workshop would render the actual situation of women in academia visible and, as a result, facilitate their institutional participation. As female scholars are often interested in subjects which are not considered to be core issues in the field of communication and media studies, we will ask female scholars to reflect about how their research interests are connected to the so-called ‘mainstream studies’. We will also welcome papers on gender equality and career opportunities, difficulties and challenges.
