Gender & Development: Ageing and Generations

The special issue of the international journal Gender & Development will focus on Ageing, and the relationship of elderly people to younger generations. The issue will look at these issues from a gender and development perspective, starting by recognising the positive economic and social contributions made by older women and men to their families, communities, and wider society. It will feature real-life case studies showing the current challenges facing older women - and men - in particular contexts, for example as caregivers for grandchildren, and consider whether the responses of development policy-makers are adequate.

Contributions are invited from development researchers and workers who have experience to share with their peers, and with policy-makers and decision-makers in development agencies and governments. The organizers anticipate the issue including articles focusing on: Poverty and ageing in particular contexts - how do the gendered dynamics play out? Older women's and men's contribution to economic livelihoods - what are the challenges? What are the responses of development organisations seeking to support older women and men? How are issues like HIV changing the relationships between the generations? Older people caring for children; whole families dependent on an old-age pension; Social support for older people - how have particular countries responded to this need? Why does gender-sensitive development policy and practice still seem resistant to integrating the issues faced by older women and men? How should development projects and programmes be adapted and designed to respond?
