    The European Science Foundation (ESF) TransEurope Programme organizes the summer workshop aimet at bring together young European researchers to share and discuss research results together with experienced researchers. The workshop welcomes all contributions that empirically deal with Social Sciences News March 2010 5 different aspects in the development of life course patterns in a globalizing Europe. Contributions to the workshop may be either country-specific or comparative in focus. Papers should primarily be based on quantitative data analyses of most recent available data sets, but qualitative studies of relevant target groups may be also welcome.

    The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology of Central European University invites young scholars from wide variety of disciplines to present in one of three panels: “Space for Time/Time for Space”; “The State, Citizenship, and Transnational Flows”; “Measure for Measure: Knowledge, Culture, and the Third Wave Marketization.” The organizers welcome both empirical and theoretical papers dealing with these topics. Given the theme of the conference, papers demonstrating epistemological awareness and transparency are especially encouraged.

    The International Research Center "Work and Human Life Cycle in Global History" at the Humboldt-University Berlin invites scholars to apply for 10 International Research Fellowships (5 stipends for senior scholars and 5 stipends for postdoctoral candidates) for the 2010–2011 academic year as well as for future academic years. The candidates especially from the disciplines of history, anthropology, law, sociology, political science, and area studies are welcome. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level or senior scholars. Postdoctoral candidates should have received their doctorate within the last five years. Proposed projects should employ a historical and transregional perspective. The project should focus not only on work/ labor, but on life-cycle as well. We particularly welcome proposals with an emphasis placed on Europe, Africa, and Asia and those that look at the entanglements between these regions.

    The Center for Public Policy (CPVP) in cooperation with the Institute for European and National Strategies (InStrategy) invites applications for the Summer School “Cultural Dimensions of Politics in Europe”, a one week program for undergraduate and postgraduate students of various nationalities and academic backgrounds (political science, sociology, media studies, anthropology and cultural studies, behavioural sciences, gender studies) from all parts of the world. The Summer School 2010 aims at drawing closer attention to the cultural dimensions of political institutions and processes in Europe (e.g. policy making, political communication, migration and citizenship in the EU). It is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and analytical skills in the area of cultural analysis of political events, processes and institutions.

    International Summer School for Doctoral Students: Civil Society around the Baltic Sea, Åland Islands, Finland

    The Aleksanteri Institute in cooperation with the Södertörn University/BEEGS, and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI)/ Department of Russian and Eurasian Studies announces the summer school aimed at doctoral students researching topics related to civil society, with a focus on post-socialist states and/or the Baltic Sea area. Twenty-five students will be selected to participate. The course focuses on the civil societies around the Baltic Sea, paying particular attention to the post-socialist states, especially Russia. The constitution of the course is multidisciplinary, incorporating political science, sociology, history and gender studies to illuminate the complexities of the subject.

    The SoDoc meeting at the Jacobs University of Bremen is an annual consultation possibility for PhD students in Social Psychology. The aim of the workshop is to provide an opportunity to present your ongoing PhD project and preliminary data, and to receive feedback from fellow graduate students as well as from experienced teachers. Participants will work in small groups (up to 15 students) with one of the teachers. Each group will have a certain main theme, based on the teachers’ field of expertise.
